Listening to you on Road safety

Dangerous roads are a serious worry for many residents. Nick Timothy MP has called for residents in local areas to be given more power so they take action to address road safety problems themselves.

On 15 October 2025, nearly thirty parish and town chairs and councillors came together to demand action on mounting road safety concerns. Representatives came from across West Suffolk, including from villages such as West Row, Lackford, Great Thurlow and Horringer.

At the meeting in Moulton, they were joined by Suffolk County Council (SCC)’s Cabinet Member for Transport Strategy, Planning and Waste, Councillor Chris Chambers, and local County Councillor Andy Drummond. Nick Timothy MP was unable to attend due to parliamentary commitments. However, a representative from his office was there to listen to parish council chairs as they discussed the challenges of getting necessary changes implemented to slow down traffic through villages.

The discussion was lively and constructive and examined proposals by SCC, in their business case for local government reform, for parish councils to have more say over the delivery of traffic calming measures and 20 mile-per-hour zones in their areas.

Commenting, Nick Timothy MP said: “With local government reform, the danger is that power is going to be taken further away from local residents and I want to see parish and town councils empowered to take responsibility for things such as speeding and road safety.”
