A message from Nick Timothy MP:
“On 23 October 2025, I wrote to National Gas on behalf of residents concerned about the proximity of a high-pressure gas pipeline to the proposed lithium battery energy storage systems (LiBESS) at the Sunnica site, near Mildenhall and Newmarket.
“LiBESS technology carries known safety risks, as shown by serious fires elsewhere — including one in Liverpool in 2020, which took 59 hours to extinguish, and another in Illinois in 2021. These thermal runaway fires produce extreme heat, toxic gases, and can reignite even after being put out.
“I have asked National Gas to confirm that full safety checks have been completed and that robust fire protections are in place before any installation proceeds so close to homes, schools, and businesses — and beside a high-pressure gas pipeline.”
