Survey by Nick Timothy MP: Assisted Suicide Legislation

This session of Parliament will come to a close this week. The Bill aiming to legalise assisted suicide will fall – because a Private Member’s Bill cannot be carried over from one session to another.

This will happen because Keir Starmer supported this legal change but refused to make a government bill, which would have been subject to a proper consultation and better scrutiny.

Many people are in favour of the principle of assisted suicide, but opponents believe the legislation is unsafe, particularly for vulnerable people. I want to ask your views about the principle of the Bill and about the suitability of the safeguards it contained, as many MPs have said they would like to reintroduce it in the next session of Parliament.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. Your views are important to me and will inform how I approach this issue when it is debated in Parliament.

SURVEY BY NICK TIMOTHY MP: ASSISTED SUICIDE LEGISLATION

  • Current Assisted suicide legislation
  • National Issues
  • Your details
Are you in favour, in principle, of a law that allows assisted suicide?
This Bill was first introduced in October 2024. Did you support it at the time?
The Bill originally required High Court approval plus two doctors. This was replaced with a voluntary commissioner and panel including a legal member, psychiatrist, and social worker. Do you think this is a sufficient safeguard?
Under the Bill, pregnant women, people with eating disorders, mental health conditions, suicidal thoughts, or who are homeless would be eligible for assisted suicide if they meet the other criteria. Do you think this is appropriate?
Overall, do you think the safeguard protections included in the Bill are strong enough?
