Nick Timothy MP commented on the recent change to the libraries service in Suffolk by the County Council.
“Suffolk’s libraries are rightly valued and cherished by many residents as peaceful places in which to read, learn and spend time. I am very keen that they should continue to be well-run and available for all who wish to use them.
The council say they decided on this new direction because they felt it was the only way to secure:
– A secure and sustainable future for all 45 libraries across the county;
– Opening hours that will remain the same;
– Job security for all frontline staff and volunteers;
– Greater opportunities to access other council services under one roof;
– Substantial investment in mobile libraries, books and computers.
I have received assurances that the library spaces will continue to serve as community hubs, providing integration with other public services and ensuring that Suffolk’s residents can access the help they need in one place. I also understand that the new direction may have been linked to Suffolk Libraries’ reported aim of cutting opening hours by 30% with no clear plan for reducing its back-office costs in order to meet increasing expenses.
I will be monitoring how the service operates as things proceed.”
