Nick Timothy, the MP for West Suffolk, has given his congratulations to Newmarket Academy’s outgoing head teacher Martin Witter for his sterling work in leading the secondary school to new heights.

Earlier this year, Mr Witter announced his retirement after being in the head teacher role since January 2021. He will leave the post in February 2026.

Mr Timothy visited the school recently to chat to Mr Witter about the school’s latest activities and plans.

The news of Mr Witter’s planned departure came after results released in August revealed seventy-three per cent of pupils sitting their GCSEs at the school earned a grade 4 or above with 46 per cent achieving a grade 5 or above. Mr Witter’s tenure also saw the school retain its overall Good rating following an inspection from Ofsted in 2023.

Speaking to the Newmarket Journal for an article published on 16 October 2025 (see above), Mr Witter said: “In the last academic year we have seen fantastic improvements across all measures in terms of outcomes for our young people and our school is now very much recognised on the regional stage.

“It has been a privilege and an honour to work with such an amazing staff team, wonderful parents and carers, simply the best students, a great community and fantastic community partners.”

Commenting, Mr Timothy said: “It’s always a pleasure to visit Newmarket Academy. I have been hugely impressed with Mr Witter’s positive, can-do approach. It is clear to me that his leadership has made a real difference for many local young people.

“Mr Witter is down-to-earth and practical and he sets the bar for high standards of learning and behaviour. He will be sorely missed. I congratulate him on his brilliant record and wish him the very best for the future.”
