The Government’s Sentencing Act means thousands of prisoners will be eligible for early release after only one third of their sentence. When they passed the Act, the Conservatives sought to amend it, so serious criminals like rapists and sex offenders were excluded. Now, with the Act due to come into effect in September, we are running out of time. Last week I introduced a Bill to Parliament to exclude rapists and sex offenders and my motion to exclude them won in the House of Commons – the first time we have defeated Labour since the general election.
