Nick Timothy MP: Will the Government keep SATs in place?

The BBC covered Nick Timothy MP’s question to the Minister for School Standards about Standard Attainment Tests here.

Standard Attainment Tests (SATs) mean primary schools are held accountable and we can measure progress data through secondary education. But the unions are demanding Labour scrap SATs in Years Two and Six in primary schools — and ministers seem happy to give them what they want. Mr Timothy’s question to the Government on Monday 10 March 2025 was simple — would the minister rule out abolishing them in primary schools: yes or no? Unfortunately the response from the Minister for School Standards, Catherine McKinnell, was not an answer to the question asked.

The full transcript of the speech can be read on Hansard by clicking here and going to column 641-642.
