Nick Timothy — the MP for West Suffolk — welcomed the chance to visit a Haverhill business when he was given a tour (on Thursday 31 October 2024) of the offices and shop floor at Herbert Retail, the local family-run retail solutions expert.
Herbert Retail provides supermarkets and other shops with technological solutions, aiding staff productivity and helping to create an enhanced shopping experience for customers. It serves scores of supermarkets across the UK, coordinating installation and maintenance of equipment.
Nick met with staff at the firm and chatted with managing director Claire Herbert and Chairman Richard Herbert about the company’s long history, and about the rewards and challenges of running a business in today’s difficult economic and commercial environment.
Following the visit, Nick said: “Herbert Retail is a true Haverhill institution. I am hugely grateful for the chance to find out more about their meticulous work in supplying vital technological solutions to big retailers such as Tesco. Companies like this are the backbone of Britain; creating jobs for local people and bringing innovation, investment and technical savvy to our area
“Unfortunately — despite promising the opposite during the election campaign — the Government seems to be doing all it can to make life even harder for small and medium-sized firms. With its Autumn Budget, firms are being punished with Business Taxes and Jobs Taxes. The overall impact of the Budget measures means business costs are likely to skyrocket.”
“I will do all I can as the local MP — both here in Suffolk and in Westminster — to argue for the creation of an environment that nurtures small and medium-sized companies.”
