Nick Timothy MP joined Councillor Andy Drummond in calling for Stop signs, more visible warnings and a reconfiguration of the crossroads at Boy’s Grave Junction following three recent accidents.

Nick Timothy MP has written to Suffolk Highways calling for urgent safety improvements at Boy’s Grave Junction on the B1506 near Kentford and Newmarket following three collisions there recently. Below he discusses safety at the junction with Newmarket Councillor Rachel Hood.

The Member of Parliament for West Suffolk said Stop signs should be installed on both sides of the crossroads to ensure vehicles come to a complete halt before crossing the B1506.

In his letter to Suffolk Highways, Mr Timothy said: “This is not good enough. We cannot wait for more accidents before measures are taken to prevent deaths and serious injuries.”

Mr Timothy had written to Suffolk Highways in the latter half of December after two collisions occurred at the junction in the middle of that month.

In their reply, dated 30 December, Suffolk Highways claimed new ‘Give Way’ signs, which were installed at the junction in June 2025, had a ‘marked effect’ because no incidents were reported between installation and the recent crashes.

However, the signs are not illuminated, making them less effective on what can be an extremely dark stretch of road.

In his latest letter, dated 12 January 2026, Mr Timothy is calling on Suffolk Highways to:

  • Amend road markings and warnings, and install large and clearly-visible STOP signs on both the north and south sides of the B1506;
  • Illuminate the new signage immediately;
  • Consider staggering the junction, similar to solutions at Dullingham/Swaffham Bulbeck on the A1303;
  • Work with Network Rail and Cambridgeshire County Council to review the weight restriction on the railway bridge near Kennett Station, which may have turned the Norwich Road into a rat run.

Commenting, Mr Timothy said: “There have been too many accidents at this crossroads – located at a place where many families come to walk dogs and which is also heavily used by large HGVs accessing the A11.

“Common-sense safety improvements can and should be implemented now. How many more collisions must there be at this junction before decisive action is taken?”
