Campaigning hard for a rail link from Cambridge to Haverhill

Nick Timothy MP is fighting for Haverhill to get its own train station and a rail link to Cambridge.

He lives just outside the town, so knows only too well the pressures on the A1307. Haverhill is one of the biggest towns in the country without its own train station, and it is time that changed.

Nick has not endorsed a particular route. However, a 2024 report commissioned by Railfuture East Anglia suggests tram-train technology, and a route stoping at Cambridge South, Granta Park, Linton, Haverhill Parkway and Haverhill Town Centre.

Nick has been campaigning hard on this issue since late 2023. He raised it with ministers from the previous government in early 2024 and — since being elected as MP for West Suffolk in July 2024 — has repeatedly raised the issue with Labour ministers in the House of Commons:

  • On 5 September 2024, he asked the government for clarity on plans for infrastructure between Cambridge and Haverhill, including the ‘urgent’ need for a rail link (see clip).
  • On 28 October 2024, he raised it with the housing and planning minister. In response, the minister, Matthew Pennycook, said the development corporation in charge of the future plan for Cambridge was examining how to take forward the development of the city and its impact on the surrounding area (see clip).
  • On 15 October 2025 (see clip above), he asked for a meeting with ministers to discuss this. The minister agreed. Mr Timothy will report back to residents on the discussion when it takes place.

Nick is fighting hard for crucial infrastructure such as this for West Suffolk.

And that is not all. He has also launched the Charter for West Suffolk, to make sure new building comes with new infrastructure and developers are held to account.

Nick is also working with local councillors on a plan for high streets, while continuing to fight against the Acorn proposal to build a biodigester at Spring Grove Farm near the A1307.
